Comparing the two men - Who's the tallest?

How much info do we need to get rid of to see them as equal?

When you look at the pictures below take some time to stare at the figures and see if you can see them the same size. As you go down the figures may change before you eyes as you stare at them. Even in the bottom two there is a different experience looking at the one where the one figure is higher on the page than the other and the one where they are right next to each other. There will be a slight feeling that the higher figure is also at least a little taller. In the bottom right picture we have not doubts that they are the same size. You might also start from the bottom and go up the page and see just were they start looking different and then start at the top and see where they start looking the same. Was it the same place? If you start from the bottom and try to focus on just the relationship of size between the two men you can see them as the same size perhaps to the top, but if you relate the men to the lines their sizes will change and you will see the back figure as taller again. Could it be that what we think we know skews our perception?

This is what happens when we look at anything. We see relationships and make up our minds as to what is based on our past experience. Understand what relationships we are making to come up with what we think is reality is an important thing to consider. As soon as you relate the left top man to the line going to a point and not to the other man, disregarding the lines we see the men as being different sizes.
